Having had two full summers in Vegas, I'm aware of how hot it can get here. Knowing this, I decided that I didn't want to dress our son in 'Sunday layers' for church. When I read Made, who featured Saltwater Kids during 'Celebrate the Boy' month in February, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

Isn't it perfect? The yellow one matches the skirt I made our daughter. I'm so excited for him to come in June and to be able to dress my little man in his Tie Onsies.

DIY Laundry Soap

I finally did it. I've been wanting to try out Homemade laundry soap, but had not found a recipe I liked until now. It was easy, simple, perfect. Our clothes smell divin and the are clean and bright. You'll be able to find all the stats and the recipe here.

For my birthday I made myself some little gifts. I've been looking at this little number since my girlfriend made several for Christmas gifts.

I came up with a pattern for my wallet. I have a heavy black number I loose in any purse and did not find one in the stores that I loved. I have a couple adjustments to make, but I really like it.

Feel the Flames

I received a hand-me-down car carrier for Curvy. It was a simple black/gray/red number. I upgraded it.

How did I come to choose this fabric? Well, I thought, this is Dale's son and so Dale should pick out the fabric for the crib. What I had in mind and what Dale had in mind were completely different. I vetoed him for the crib but thought, he should have some say in one of my projects, so he got the carrier. I surprised him with the above, needless to say, He loved it. I'm glad, I like it too.

Oversized T-Shirts

My mom gave me some new over sized t-shirts to wear. I really liked them, except that I felt like I was wearing an over sized t-shirt. I looked at other shirts I had and decided to add elastic. I think they turned out pretty cute.

Play Kitchen

We wanted to get/make Jane a play kitchen for Christmas. She loves being in the kitchen cooking. I found this blog post and decided I could do this.

I also added an apron because we were pinning a towel around Jane when she helped in the kitchen.

She now has her own kitchen fit with food and hot pads. She loves them and it was really easy to make.

maybe distracted is the better word. For those who don't know we are having a boy this June and my mind has been on how to turn our daughter's room into a girl and boy friendly place. Several months ago I went to Crazy Old Ladies for the quilt pattern for Jane's quilt, and loved it. They have great patterns available and I highly recommend them. The pattern was easy to use and the instructions also easy to understand. I think I am going to use the same pattern again for Curvy's crib quilt, fetus name not actual given name for baby boy, with more boyish fabric but I did want to see what the latest was with COL just to make sure that was what I really wanted to do. Right now they have a contest where the winner will receive 5 quilt patterns. I would feel very lucky if I win. I've posted pictures below and links to just some of my favorites. Be sure to check them out and enter in their contest.

Alterations

Lately I've been doing some alterations for people on the side. I don't charge very much but it's been a little extra cash here and there. Here is one alteration I did for a local girl. She wanted to be able to wear this dress to a dance but needed some sleeves and a the neckline raised. I love that there are young women in the world who want to be modest. Thanks Jackie for being a great example to my daughter.

Jane's Quilt

It is finally finished. This is my first machine sewn quilt. I did this one start to finish. I think it turned out pretty good and Jane loves it. (Now I can take a deep breath.)

Missing

I noticed that some of my projects are missing from this site. Here they are...
This is a family quilt I helped my friend with for Christmas last year. It has all the names of each child and grandchild around the boarder with the grandparents in the middle. Also on this quilt is the date the gandparents were married and a quote from the scriptures, 'As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.' I loved doing this with my friend and her parents loved receiving it.

A women who works with my mother had twins this year. I made her two cordinating 3D blankets from Thimble Art Quilts. I loved doing the animals and seeing them come alive.

Remember this, well this is the quilt from that pattern.

In May, my dear friend had a baby prematurly. The baby did not make it. I wanted to make something for her to document his short life and something to bring her comfort. While I was driving to Utah one week, this idea just came to me while I was asking myself, 'What would I want if that happened to me?' The idea was a pillow. I would want something to hold because I couldn't hold my baby.

The next is a Martha Stewart pattern. I made these cute little booties for a baby shower in our ward. They are too small for any baby to wear, but you can make them larger.

For a gift, I made a 'bankie'; a small blanket any kid can carry around. It is 15" x 15", the perfect size.

I finished Jane's Growth Chart. I am excited to add her height over the years and watch her grow.

Today, I started the squares for Jane's quilt. I will blanket stitch them over the weekend. I hope to get things all quilted and bound by her birthday-my baby turns 2 in just under three weeks, its crazy.

I finally finished my own quiet book from this last spring. I made one for Jane's Birthday, which she already plays with, and one for my niece's birthday. I am excited to give it to her.
I made this from an idea Kacey and Ashley had. It's a cover to go over Jane's car seat to keep it cool in this hot weather. It has worked perfectly and it only took 20 minutes to make.

The cute bag will be our July project. It was found on thequiltingdiaries.blogspot.com. This 32-minute messanger bag is prefect for toeting summer fun around. Please be prepared to bring the following items:

For an adult/bigger-kid size bag the fabric requirement are 2 coordinating half yards.
For a smaller child's bag you will only need two pieces at 3/8 of a yard.

Today I made bows, bows and more bows. The bows For a Friend are a gift for a baby shower. The wedding bows are for Tiffany's wedding. I am not sure about the purple one. It looks so big on Jane so I will probablly make another. The rest are much needed bows for Jane. Her collection has become slim.

I have had several cousins who have had children recently and I have made some quilts for them. My last two quilts are from a frog pattern by Thimble Art. I am making up a different boarder for each quilt and I've used different fabrics also. These pictures are examples for one who had a girl. There will be butterflies and other 'girl' insects on the boarder that are also in the main fabric. The second frog quilt is for a boy so it will be more 'boyish' than the first one. I am so excited to get done and give the quilts to my cousins.

I am trying to finish different sewing and craft projects over the next month. I want to get started in some new projects but I need to finish what I've started first. Look forward to new posts as I get projects finished.

Alcohol Stove & Wonder Box

In May we will be doing Emergency Preparedness in Sewing Group. We are going to be making an alcohol stove that when used the only byproducts are water and carbon dioxide so it can be used indoors if necessary. We will also be making a wonder box which is similar to a slow cooker. For facts about these items please email me, email found on profile, and I will send you our information sheet. Please be prepared with the following items on May 7th. (There is no need to wash fabric before making the wonder box seeing how there will be no washing after you make it.) We'll see you there.

Alcohol Stove
1 gallon paint can or a #10 cannery can (cleaned well)
1 quart sized paint can or a large peach can (cleaned well)
1 roll of cheap regular toilet paper
1 bottle of Isopropyl alcohol 70% proof

February Project

In February we are making quiet books. They will be made of soft fabrics and felts based on Primary Songs. There will be eight pages in each book using the following songs: I Love to See the Temple, Saturday, I am a Child of God, I’m Glad to Pay a Tithing, My Heavenly Father Loves Me, Follow the Prophet, Families Can Be Together Forever, and I Hope They Call Me on a Mission. We are trying to keep the cost at $10/book. Please let us know if you are interested and how many you would like to make. We need a total in order to figure the final cost. If there is anyone with buttons, felt, snaps, or other sewing items they would like to donate please contact us. Thanks!

My cousin Tracey is having a baby girl in January. My Aunt said she likes blue, yellow and ducks so this is her quilt. My mom will be getting it quilted in Utah seeing how I can't find an available quilter in Vegas. (If you know anyone let me know.) Then I will finish it over Christmas and we will get it to her. I hope she likes it. The pattern is new to me and it's been awhile since I have done a 'traditional' quilt.

Pillowcase Materials

For THIS Thursday you will need the following materials for two pillowcases at a finished size of 20" x 31 1/4":

Fabric Requirements
Print One(light green*): 1 5/8 yards
Color Strip(dark green*): 1/8 yard
Print Two(cream*): 5/8 yard
Other Materials
Sewing thread (If you need a color other than Black, Brown, White, or Cream)

*Colors are indicated in diagram so you will know where your fabric is placed please feel free to buy fabric is the colors and patterns that you would enjoy.

Please be sure to pre-wash and iron your fabrics before coming. If you have a sewing machine and an iron and an ironing board please feel free to bring them with you.

Capes & Pillows

The capes were a success. I hope everyone was able to finish theirs at home. I will be posting pictures from that night later on when I get a chance. Our ward did them a year or two ago but there is still some interest so this mouth that is what we will be doing. I will post next week the material requirements. Super Hero Capes

We will be meeting on September 25th at 6:30pm in the Relief Society room. The materials you will need are:

3/4 yard of one color of your choice*
3/4 yard of another color
1 sheet (8"x10") of felt in the colors of your choice**

We will provide the thread for the capes. Please bring your material pre-washed and ironed ready for cutting. If you have any questions please give me a comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

* If you are doing a particular super hero such as super man or batman I would do your material in one of each. That way you can have one super hero on one side and the other on the other side. See pictures for clarification.

**If you are doing a particular super hero I would bring felt in the colors of their symbol or shield.

This month we are going to relax and enjoy each other's company as we finish the humanitarian quilt we started at Enrichment last month. My girlfriend has a little girl about 16 months old. I am making her this 3D Dragonfly quilt. I'll post a picture of the completed quilt when it is done.

June Project Instructions

We will be doing rag quilts 40” x 60”. For a quilt with three different materials on top you will need 2/3 of a yard for each material. Be sure to prewash your material, and then cut it into 11” x 11” squares. You should have at least 8 squares for each material, 24 squares total. You will need two yards for your backing, also prewashed, cut into 11” x11” squares. For your patting you can do either another layer of flannel cutting 24 more squares, 11” x 11” or a polyfiber batting. You will have three layers of flannel totally 72 individual squares if you choice to do flannel. Being that we live a “warm” environment we could get away with only doing two layers-not batting or third layer.

Material Needed for May

OK you will need a fat quarter of two different materials in order to make two quilt squares. So if you are doing a pillow like the one displayed in Relief Society you'll need 1/2 yard of each fabric plus another 1/2 yard for the back. If you would like to be a little more creative you'll have to adjust your material measurements. If you have any questions please feel free to post them and I will respond. The short end of it:

I wanted to let you all know what next month's project is going to be so you can start looking for material. The block pattern is Friendship by Janet Wickell.

We are going to focus on simple techniques to create triangles in your quilts and also how material placement can change the look of your pattern. Our First Meeting

The Quilting Queens will be meeting on April 23rd at Linda Thomas's house at 7:00pm. We will be discussing types of classes we would like to have through the rest of the year. All 'craft' ideas are welcome. Some ideas the presidency has discussed, along with quilting, are crochet, knitting, needle point, sewing basics, and beyond. We would like to also help Sister Phyllis Jakobson & Sister Angel Manriquez with their humanitarian efforts for local and church projects. Our main objectives are to strength home and family, build faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, emphasize the divine worth of each sister, exercise charity and nurture those in need, serve and support each sister. We hope to see you there.
